Day 4: Self-motivation

I've been thinking about how to motivate myself.  Let's face it, without focus and conscious effort, our natural bent is to sin and sloth.  If I don't fight against it, I'm going to go toward ease (picking up fast food) and sloth (TV-vegging rather than an active life).  But I also know that, if what I'm doing "feels too different", then I won't keep it up.  So I need to counter that with "wanting the change"--ie, using my love of cooking to make creative meals, and using my love for play to incorporate exercise.  And if it all isn't a part of my life and desire to glorify God, then it is truly meaningless.

A few random thoughts about motivation:

Michael Jordan:  I’ve missed more than 9000 shots in my career. I’ve lost almost 300 games. 26 times, I’ve been trusted to take the game winning shot and missed. I’ve failed over and over and over again in my life. And that is why I succeed.”

Write down specific goals:  For me, it's 1)  Lose 30 lbs in 97 days; 2) Incorporate "play" into exercise 3x a week (note:  the other days can be traditional walking/etc).  3) Run (not walk) Jacob's 5k in Laingsburg on August 20; 4) Try 2 new recipes a week that are healthy and creative.

Les Brown:  "Wanting something is not enough.  You must hunger for it.  Your motivation must be absolutely compelling in order to overcome the obstacles that will invariably come your way.

Scott Young:  "Go for five.  Start working for five minutes.  Often that push is enough to get you going.

Today's food/activity:  fruit smoothie for breakfast, chilled tomato/basil soup and salad for lunch, grilled portabella mushroom burger, couscous salad for dinner.  Walking 2.5 miles at lunch.
